A chronic miasm can be classified as an ideopathic disease that exists independently and arises from inhereting it from past generations. A chronic disease is a flare up / or extension of a chronic miasm and can only arise as the miasm progress’. The chronic disease then gives rise to those variable pathic diseases.

Psora - manifesting itself in a skin lesion that was itchy, particularly if scratched. The main source of changes can be seen in the feelings, functions, and sensations as is seen with conditions identified by the prefix “hypo”. The nervous and endocrine systems are involved and affected. The main remedy is sulpher.

Sycosis - named after figs for their shape because the characteristic skin lesion was small genital warts that Hahnmeann noticed resembled the shape of figs. Conditions with the prefix “hyper” are often signs of sycosis as well as the prefix “itis” for the re-occurance of inflammation in sycosis patients. People treated for this miasm by suppression or crude treatment generally show negative reactions very strongly, similar treatments may also arouse the miasm if latent very easily as compared to other miasmatic states. Blood and circulatory systems are affected and involved. Pulsatilla is the main remedy.

Syphilis - characteristic genital ulcer. Tissue destruction common and conditions marked with the “dys” prefix are an issue. Involves the infection of the mind (suicide, addictions) and body. Calcarea is the main remedy.

Tuberculosis - is a generally recent addition to the miasms (19^th century). Has elements of both Psora and Syphilis. Has been referred to as pseudo-psora. Nosode is bacillinum and constitutional remedy is phosphorus.

Carcinosinum - a new plague that is the newest member of the chronic miasms. Still much debate if cancer is in fact a miasm or a chronic disease arising therefrom. All it’s characteristics put it in the miasm category. It shares many features with Tuberculinum and Sycosis. Silicea.
